Some of you probably heard of a man called Abraham Kuyper he
was a Dutch theologian. There was a quote that he gave way back when but it’s
one those quotes that I’ve always kind of remember and have lodged in the back
of my mind. But here’s what he said, “There’s not a square inch in the whole
domain of our human existence, over which Christ, who is sovereign over all,
does not cry mine.
But the big word in the Bible if you really want to
appreciate who Jesus is it’s the word Lord. He made everything he sustains
everything and controls everything. And if you weren’t looking for that word
Lord, in the Bible in the Old Testament, it’s probably used 6000 times and in
the New Testament 600+ times. The very story in our Bible, Genesis chapter 2
“The Lord God made the Earth and the heaven,” “The Lord God formed man out of
the dust of the Earth.” The Bible wants us to know that Jesus is Lord, the Lord
of creation. Listen to what John says in John chapter 1, “All things are made
through him and without him was not anything made that was made.” When it comes
to God taking care of the earth, sustaining the sun rising, the rainfall and
every day existence the Bible again spotlights Jesus as Lord. Colossians
chapter 1 “For by him all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible
and invisible things whether thrones all things were created through him and
for him and he is before all things and in him all things hold together.
So we can say in terms of him being Lord, he is the creator
Lord, he’s the sustainer Lord. And the third thing we can say is he’s the
Savior Lord. “They shall call his name Jesus for he will save his people from
their sins.” Jonah chapter 2 “Salvation is of the Lord.” And if you run to the
book of Romans and look for that word Lord you’ll find its used probably 40
times. And the great focus as we know in the book of Romans is on salvation,
it’s on the Savior. It’s what we read in Romans 5 “Since we have been justified
by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
So when we think of Jesus Christ it’s a great word to keep
in mind, Jesus is Lord. That means he’s the creator Lord, he’s the sovereign or
Lord over providence and he’s also Lord over salvation. That means that
anything happens in our lives personally, and anything that happens in our
country on the national level and anything that happens globally, he’s always
Lord, that never changes. Not one second of your life has that ever changed
throughout the history of mankind, he’s always been Lord. That’s good to
remember when we come to pray, why even pray? If you don’t believe he’s Lord,
why pray?
Go back to John chapter 20 that section read earlier, here
we have Thomas the disciple, he has some doubts and questions, “Is Jesus really
Lord?” His death on the cross has shaken his belief system. How could the
Messiah King die? That doesn’t make sense to him. If he’s the King, the Lord
how can he reign from a cross or from a tomb? He can’t. But when Thomas sees
the resurrected Christ that changes everything. When he sees him face-to-face,
look what he says, go back to verse 28 John chapter 20; “My Lord, my God.” The
resurrection convinced him that Jesus is Lord. That Jesus has authority even
over death itself.
Every miracle of Christ shouts he is Lord, every time a
sinner gets saved it shouts he is Lord and every prayer that gets answered, he
is Lord. So that’s good to remember when we come to pray to remember who God,
who our Lord Jesus is- he is Lord of lords.
